Fall Lawn Care Tips
Fall FAQs
Our Fall Lawn Care FAQs explain how to prep your lawn for winter with tips on overseeding, aeration, and leaf management.
When is best to overseed?

Ideally ~45 days before frost to allow seedlings to establish.
Should I aerate again in fall?

Yes—especially if spring aeration was skipped or lawn compaction persists.
What is the most important fall lawn treatment?

Aeration and overseeding are the #1 step Missouri homeowners can take for a greener lawn. Fall temperatures and rainfall create perfect seed growing conditions.
When should I overseed in Missouri?
We recoommend to seed your lawn between September 1 and October 15. Seeding outside this window lowers germination and root development.
Should I fertilize in fall?
Absolutely! At Hackmann, we use a fall fertilizer that is high in potassium to strengthen your grass roots for winter.
Do I need to remove leaves in fall?
Absolutely. Leaves left over winter cause snow mold, dead patches, and suffocated grass.
When is the last time I should mow before winter?
Make your final cut around 2.5 to 3 inches once grass stops growing in late November or early December. This helps reduce the likelyhood of brown patches in your grass in the spring.
Should I clean up after snow melts if I still have leaves?
Yes. Moist leaves suffocate your lawn and can even promote mold. We suggest that you remove your leaves as soon as conditions are dry enough.
Should I plant trees or shrubs in fall?
Yes. Fall is the BEST time to plant trees, shrubs and bushes in the state of Missouri. Blue spruce, arborvitae, and other privacy trees establish strong roots better in cool temperatures.
How can I protect my lawn from Missouri’s winter?
Fertilize, clear leaves, repair bare spots, and avoid heavy foot traffic on frosty lawns.
How do fall winds affect my lawn?
St. Charles County and St. Louis County, MO experiences stronger straight line winds due to open terrain within the Unites States Tornado Alley. Planting evergreens on the wind facing side of your home or business can protect your siding, fences, and young lawns.
