Spring in the Midwest doesn’t tiptoe in—it barrels through in bursts of sunshine, rainstorms, and the occasional rogue snowflake. After a long, unpredictable winter, your yard is begging for a little TLC. Whether you're in St. Charles County or anywhere else in the Midwest, this spring yard checklist will help you wake up your lawn and garden the right way.

🌱 Lawn Care: Back to Green

Rake out winter debris
Dead leaves, fallen twigs, and surprise squirrel leftovers? Time to clean house. A good raking clears the way for healthy growth.

Check for snow mold
Does your lawn look like it has dandruff? That’s snow mold. Gently rake those patches to let air in and stop the spread.

Aerate compacted soil
Midwest soil gets tight over winter—like jeans after a second helping of Thanksgiving dinner. Aerating helps oxygen, water, and nutrients reach the roots.

Apply a pre-emergent herbicide (early spring)
Stop crabgrass and other invasive weeds before they even show up. Timing is everything here—get it down before soil temps hit 55°F.

Seed bare patches
Only after you're done with herbicide. These two don’t play well together. Wait a few weeks between herbicide and seeding.

First mow = high mow
Don’t scalp your lawn—this isn’t a breakup haircut. Start with a higher cut to protect new grass and encourage root strength.

🌻 Garden Beds & Landscaping

Clear mulch and debris
Give your flower beds some breathing room. Removing winter mulch and debris lets the soil warm up and prevents mold and pests.

Boost with compost or fertilizer
Midwest soil just went through a long nap—wake it up with compost or a gentle fertilizer to support new growth.

Prune shrubs (when needed)
If your shrubs bloom on new growth, now's the time to prune. Late March through early April is generally safe—just double-check your plant variety first.
