Pro Lawn Mowing Tips Based On Frequently Asked Questions

Hi there! Have some questions about our lawn mowing? Find the answers below.

  • How often should I mow my lawn?

At Hackmann Lawn and Landscape we recommend mowing your lawn once to twice per week during peak growing season. In spring and early summer, you may need to mow every 5 to 7 days. Avoid cutting more than 1/3 of the grass blade at a time. Looking for someone to cut your grass and save you time?

  • What is the ideal mowing height for my lawn?

The ideal height for mowing your lawn is to cut it to 1/3 of the grass length.

  • Should I bag or mulch my clippings?

We generally recommend mulching your grass clippings as it returns valuable nutrients like nitrogen to the soil, acts as a natural fertilizer and saves time. It also promotes a healthier lawn while reducing waste.

However, if your grass is diseased, extra long or too wet, it's best to bag your grass to prevent smothering your turf.

    Here is when to mulch:

    • When you mow weekly or bi-weekly and are removing less than 1/3 of the grass blade height.
    • When you want to give your lawn a nutrient boost.
    • When you wish to save time
    • When you need to retain more moisture during the dry seasons, it's a good idea to mulch as it leaves your grass cool and moist.

Here is when to bag your grass clippings:

    • When your lawn is diseased: this helps to prevent the spread of fungus and disease
    • When your grass is tall and overgrown
    • Weed Control: Bagging prevents spreading crabgrass, dandelion and nutsedge seeds.
    • Fall Leaf clean up. When leaves are too thick to mulch effectively, it's a good time to bag them.
  • Is it okay to mow when the grass is wet?

Yes, you can mow wet grass, however, it is NOT recommended. Mowing your lawn while the grass is wet puts your turf at risk of tearing cut, soil compaction, clumping that also smothers your grass, damage to the lawn mower and other safety hazards.

We recommend waiting 24 hours after rain to give the lawn time to dry out, prior to mowing.

  • Why are sharp mower blades important?

Sharp mower blades are important to maintain an even cut as well as to prevent safety hazards.

  • Should mowing patterns be changed?

Yes. Alternating mowing directions prevents soil compaction, reduces ruts, and encourages upright growth for a healthier, more uniform lawn.

  • What time of day is best for mowing?

Mid-morning is ideal. Avoid mowing in the heat of the afternoon or late evening when moisture may linger on the grass blades.

  • Can mowing too short damage my lawn?

Yes. Cutting grass too short (“scalping”) weakens roots, increases weed invasion, and stresses the turf, especially during summer heat.
