3 key benefits of regular lawn mowing | Hackmann Lawn | Dardenne Prairie MO
  • How often should I water my lawn in Missouri summers?

Water 1 to 1.5 inches per week, preferably early mornings. Missouri heat paired with humidity can quickly stress cool season grasses.

  • What height should I mow in summer?

Raise mower blades to 3.5 to 4 inches. Taller grass shades roots and reduces drought stress.

  • Should I fertilize during summer?

Only apply slow-release fertilizer if necessary. Avoid fertilizing during intense heat waves to prevent burning.

  • Can I fertilize in mid‑summer?

Only with slow-release products and when grass is actively growing, not during peak drought.

  • How do I know if pests are damaging my lawn?

Watch for spreading brown patches, moths at dusk, or wilting grass.

  • How do I prevent brown patches?

Avoid mowing during peak heat, sharpen blades regularly, water deeply, and ensure proper drainage.

  • Can I seed my lawn in summer?

Hackmann Lawn does not recommend seeding your yard in the summer. Grass seed struggles to survive Missouri’s heat. Fall is the ideal seeding season.

  • Should I treat for grubs?

Yes, you want to apply preventative grub control in late June to early July, especially in areas near woods, golf courses, or older neighborhoods.

  • Why does my lawn look worse than my neighbor’s?

City lawns, like those in St. Louis, tend to be smaller then county yards and receive more shading from buildings, while St. Charles and St. Louis County lawns are more exposed to sun, heat, and winds, especially near highways or open fields. This may impact the landscaping maintenance required  year round. This may include how often you will want to water your lawn, mow your grass, trim your bushes and shrubs, fertilize, aerate and overseed. While hardscapes can become an excellent solution for those looking for a backyard retreat, the reality is that you want to consider what you want from your yard, and follow the propoer maintenance tips that work best for you. If you feel overwhelmed, our Hackmann Handy Helper can answer any questions you may have, and we have landscape designers on staff to help you bring your garden goals to life.

  • Should I bag or mulch grass clippings?

It's ideal to mulch whenever possible. It returns nitrogen to the soil and improves moisture retention. It can also be used for organic gardens. However, we understand that this may not always be a viable option to mulch in certain areas due to HOA's. That's where bagging your grass clippings is the way to go.

  • How can I reduce heat stress on my lawn?

Just like any garden, your lawn is a living organism and requires the right touch. Water early, mow high, avoid foot traffic on drought stressed turf for the greenest lawn.  Aerate and fertilize your yard later in the year for even better results all year long.
