General Sod Installation After Care Questions

Hi there! Have some questions about how to maintain new sod? Find the answers below.

  • What should I do immediately after getting my new sod installed?

    1. Water immediately after sod installation
    2. Maintain your watering schedule as listed below
    3. Limit foot traffic on new sod
    4. Maintain lawn mowing based on guidelines below
    5. Fertilize new sod
    6. Monitor edges and seems for browning of sod and water by hand as needed
    7. Watch for air pockets and settling
    8. Prevent Weed interference
  • How often should I water my new sod?

You should water your new sod using the following schedule.

    • Week 1: Water 2 to 4 times daily for 5 to 10 minutes each time to keep your new sod as moist as a sponge.
    • Week 2: Reduce watering your sod to just twice a day.
    • Week 3: Gradually reduce watering your sod to 3 times per week and focus on watering longer and deeper yet less frequently to encourage root growth.
    • Pro Sod Tip:Water your new sod early in the morning. This prevents evaporation and lawn disease such as mold and fungus.
  • When can I walk on my new sod?

It's important to limit foot traffic on your new sod during the first 3 weeks to prevent shifting and air pockets. Keep people, pets, bikes and lawn equipment off of your new sod to keep it looking green and healthy.

  • When can I mow my new sod?

You should wait to mow your new sod until after it has firmly taken root in the soil. This takes about 2 to 3 weeks. When you do mow, ensure that your lawn mower blade is sharp and that you do not mow more than 1/3 of the grass height.

  • My Sod is brown. Now what?

Describe the item or answer the question so that site visitors who are interested get more information. You can emphasize this text with bullets, italics or bold, and add links.
  • Should I fertilize my sod after installation?

If you had your new sod installed by Hackmann Lawn and Landscape, a starter fertilizer was likely applied during your sod installation. If you did not have a starter fertilizer applied at installation, apply one 4 weeks after installation.
